Lyrics
What would you do, if I told you
You only had one day to live
Who’d be there to console you?
Who’d you spend your last moments with?
Who would you bother telling
All the things that you had left unsaid?
Or would you go on selling
Your soul until you’re dead?
Would today be any different
If tomorrow does not come
Or would you just go on with your life
Because you’re the only one?
Would you feel any remorse
For all the fucked up shit you’ve done?
Or continue walking alone
Thanking Him for what’s to come?
No one lives life
Walk in a straight line
There’s always downs
Everything’s not fine
Everyone’s fucked up
Tasted their own pride
Everyone’s felt pain
Some just hold it inside
You live inside your own world
Blinded by your jaded truth
Nothing else seems to ever matter
If nothing does not include you
Your selfish way of life and now
You’re left here to make this choice
But nothing that’s been said to you
Can be heard over your own voice
No one lives life
Walk in a straight line
There’s always downs
Everything’s not fine
Everyone’s fucked up
Tasted their own pride
Everyone’s felt pain
Some just hold it inside
You’re not the only son in life
Not everything revolves around you
Someday you’ll hear all of these words
And you won’t know quite what to do
But you put yourself in this spot
No one to blame but you
You’ll just have to dig yourself out
But that’s something you’re used to
No one lives life
Walk in a straight line
There’s always downs
Everything’s not fine
Everyone’s fucked up
Tasted their own pride
Everyone’s felt pain
Some just hold it inside
Story Behind The Song
I just want to say that I am a firm believer in a song taking on meaning for each person that listens to it. And I hope that happens for you. I just want to let you know what I was thinking when I wrote it. But please don’t let that ruin what the song means for you…
So Nature had written this little arpeggio riff type thing on electric. He played it and I loved it. I immediately wanted him to keep playing it. So I just sat there for a second and vibed with it. Then I wrote what started out being called “Me”.
This was a song that Kinder didn’t really play a lot. But Nature and I loved it. We just couldn’t figure out how to ever make it work. I think it was always too long. And repetitive. But I had a lot to say!
I wrote the lyrics about a girl I was dating at the time. And we had broken up. The verses are actually a poem I had written about her. The chorus was a little start to a poem I had written about me. And I combined the two. I called it “Me” at the time.
So years later, when I was playing around with Ai, I put the lyrics in and I tinkered with the prompts. I still couldn’t get what I wanted. It just didn’t sound right.
Until I was walking in Wegmans one day and it hit me… DUET!!!
I don’t know why it was Wegmans. But I distinctly remember walking by the cash registers on my way out and it dawned on me that I could use the song as like an argument between a couple. And they’re both too proud to admit faults. They both stuff things inside. And the chorus is how they answer each other’s accusations in the verses.
I hope you like it!
